Until recently the only periodontal therapy available was deep cleanings and in more advanced cases, surgery. Deep cleaning includes Scaling and root planning procedures where the deposits in the tooth (Calculus & stains) are removed. This also includes removal of any irregular surfaces in the root.
More advanced cases where there is periodontal pocket with pocket depth greater than 6mm and bony defects are treated by periodontal surgeries. Periodontal surgeries are also done to treat the hyperplastic gum disease which is called Gingival Hyperplasia.
More recently, antibiotics were added to kill the bacteria. Such treatment made a lasting impression on those who went through it.
With the advance of laser gum surgery and gum treatment, and our understanding of the disease, laser periodontal treatment can be accomplished painlessly, quickly, and with your cooperation, can be kept in remission.
